How To Know When It Is The Right Time For An Oil Change

oil change

Your car needs plenty of TLC if it is to remain as trusty as it is today. Changing your oil on a regular basis is just one of the things that you will need to do in order to keep it in great condition. The question is how do you know when it is the right time to visit a car mechanic for an oil change? Let’s find out below:

  • How Often Should You Change Your Car’s Oil?

This varies from car to car, but it is recommended to change your car’s oil every 3,000 miles that you drive or every three months when using regular oil. If you use synthetic oil, you can extend the interval to 5,000 miles.  Newer cars have indicators to inform you when to do your first oil change – but at 10,000 miles or one-year, you should probably head to your mechanic.

  • Signs Your Car’s Oil Needs Changing

As your car ages, it is likely to require more frequent oil changes. A sign that an oil change is necessary is if you have to add oil or “top off” in between oil changes.  If you are hearing distressing noises coming from the engine, you are headed to a danger zone. Oil is designed to provide your engine with lubrication. When enough of it is not available, you are likely to hear metal-on-metal knocking sounds. A check-engine light may not come on for low or no oil in engine.

Another sure-fire sign is when your oil change or check engine warning light pops much earlier than expected compared to your oil sticker mileage.  When this happens, stop and take a look at the oil levels immediately. Even if they do not seem low, take note of the color of the oil. It should be an amber shade. If it is darker than that or looks dirty, then an oil change and a visit to a car mechanic is a must.
