Auto Safety in New Vehicles Has Never Been Better!

When people are looking at new cars on the lot, or on the road, most of their focus is going to be on two areas: the looks or the performance. However, one aspect that’s often overlooked is just how great modern auto safety has become. Today’s cars are vastly safer than models from decades past, including smart computer-controlled systems which weren’t even technically possible 10-20 years ago.

How do new cars keep you safe? Here are just a few of the many auto safety features which are standard, or quickly becoming so.

Five Great Life-Saving Featuresin Modern Vehicles

  1. Seat belts

It’s almost hard to remember that there was a time when seat belts were optional for both drivers and car manufacturers. Early seat belts were lap-only, but the development of three-point belts with the shoulder strap made crashes much more survivable.

  1. Airbags

Airbags are credited with saving tens of thousands of lives over the years. Today, airbags aren’t simply for the front seats – car manufacturers are including side and side-curtain airbags to protect against “T bone” impacts, saving even more lives as a result.

  1. Computer-controlled braking/stability control

In older cars, slamming the brakes was a risky choice. In far too many cases, the brakes would cause the wheels to lock up, and send the car into an uncontrolled skid. Modern computer control makes this nearly impossible, by monitoring the wheels’ traction and preventing a full skid.

  1. Backup and blind spot cameras

Every car has some blind spots and maintaining visibility while backing up was always difficult. So, modern cars now add extra cameras that feed their video into screens in the dash. This allows the driver better visibility, without forcing them to crane their neck or turn around awkwardly while driving.

  1. Smart alert systems

The latest generation of smart cars are actively watching out for you! They use cameras and other monitoring devices to detect potential obstacles in the road, or to see if the car is staying properly in its lane. Well-timed alerts can let a distracted driver know to re-focus on the road before an accident happens.
