Tips from Fred’s Auto Repair for Passing the New York State Auto Inspection

One thing that drivers know comes around every year is their annual state auto inspection. However, sometimes it can be difficult to determine without a shadow of a doubt whether your car will pass the test. That’s why the auto experts from Fred’s Auto Repair have collected some insightful tips for you here.

Below you’ll find some considerations to make before bringing your car in for a New York State auto inspection.

Safety Components

One of the easiest ways to fail your auto inspection is when there’s a safety issue with your vehicle. However, most people aren’t aware that this includes more than your brakes.

Inspectors will also take into account your car’s rear and side-view mirrors to ensure they’re functioning properly and aren’t broken.

Your vehicle’s wiper blades, headlights, and taillights all need to be in working order and without makeshift characteristics (like being held together with duct tape).  Windows will be scrutinized for tint that’s too dark, cracks that could spread further or items that obstruct visibility.

Seatbelts, tires, and your horn will all also be checked.

Emissions

The emissions released by your vehicle need to be within the local and federal guidelines. However, there are some things that can cause you to fail your (on board diagnostic II) OBDII emissions inspection, including:

  • If your car battery died recently.
  • I’ve you’ve just had repairs done to your vehicle’s check engine light.
  • If your car’s check engine light was recently reset.
  • If you’ve changed your battery recently.
  • Your car spends a lot of time sitting idle.
  • A loose or missing gap cap

For those who fall into any of the categories above, driving your vehicle for around 150 miles before bringing in your vehicle to be tested can be a good way to avoid being flagged for one of these issues.

This is because your car’s diagnostic system will likely have the time it needs to reset.

There are select few vehicles that are exempt from New York State inspection program. Cars that are over 25 years old or under 2 years old are the major exceptions to the rule.

Farm equipment, motorcycles, electric cars or diesel cars with a gross vehicle weight rating or GVWR less than 8,501 pounds are exempt from emissions testing. The lion’s share of drivers will need to prove that they’ve passed New York State’s requirement by displaying their successful inspection sticker prominently on their windshield.
