Have you been noticing a bit more of a bumpy ride when you take your car or truck out on the road? Has steering your vehicle on a slightly uneven street getting harder and harder? If you answered yes to these, chances are you may be having issues with your car’s shocks and struts. When a car’s shocks and struts being to wear, driving and controlling it can become more and more difficult and dangerous.

To help you understand what these parts do and how to know if they need replacing, our Fred’s Auto Repair team has put together this guide.

How Shocks & Struts Help Your Car

These parts are an integral element of the suspension system in your car. While not the same, both shocks and struts operate and provide a similar purpose. Basically, their job is to adjust to road conditions, making it easier to drive while protecting your car’s undercarriage from excessive damage.

Will My Car Have Both Shocks & Struts?

You don’t need to worry about maintaining and replacing both since your vehicle will either have struts or shocks – but never both. Knowing this can help eliminate those shady mechanics who may try to convince you that both your shocks and struts need replacing. Which one you have will depend on the particular make and production of your car or truck.

Struts not only are part of a car’s suspension system; they can affect the wheel alignment as well. Because of this, when you have your struts replaced, you will always need your wheels to be aligned at the same service.

Shocks, on the other hand, are your car’s shock absorbers and function to improve handling.

What If They Fail?

Shocks or struts that are damaged or faulty will make it extremely difficult for you to drive and control your car compared to how you normally would. Such a basic thing as driving over a speed bump can cause a car to lose control, which not only puts you at risk but also other drivers as well. Proper maintenance and service is very important to avoid a situation where your shocks or struts give out.

6 Indicators That You Need New Struts or Shocks

While we have briefly touched on some, here is a list of ways to know that it may be time to get your shocks or struts replaced.

  • A Rough Ride

It is the most obvious and easiest to gauge. If you are experiencing a super bumpy drive – especially over bumps – that is a clear indicator. Losing control of your car when you go over a bump is not only an indicator to get them replaced, but to also to pull over and stop driving.

  • Steering Issues

If you experience steering issues and difficulty, like swaying when you take a turn or switch car lanes, you most likely need shock or strut replacement.

  • Odd Tire Wear

If your shocks and struts are affecting your suspension and/or alignment, you will notice odd and unbalanced wear and tear. Issues with suspension can make your tires have cup looking dips form near the side of the tread.

  • Fluid Drips

One of the most common indicators of wear to your vehicle’s struts is if you notice a fluid leak. Keep an eye when you are pulling out of your driveway or garage as early prevention can mean a big difference in safety and drivability.

  • Brakes

As mentioned earlier, issues with struts can affect more than just your car’s suspension. When braking, if you notice your car creeps forward or if you notice a general instability, this may be your struts failing.

  • Miles Driven

Like most parts in your car, as the mileage goes up, they will need more maintenance and eventual replacement. For shocks and struts, it is recommended to have a certified mechanic replace them every 50,000 miles (roughly). The make, model, and year, of your car can affect when you should bring it in. Check your user manual that comes with your vehicle for further information about the time to replace worn shocks or struts.
