What Are Shocks & Struts and When Do They Need to Be Replaced?

• Shocks

Shocks are the most important part of your vehicle’s suspension system by helping it control the impact of your springs and suspension. They also are key to helping your tires stay on the road while you drive. If you had no shocks, your car would not be able to handle any bumps and you would be bouncing all over the road (and off it).

A coil, hydraulic fluid, and a piston make up your shocks. These all work together so when your car hits/dips into a bump they help your car’s coil go back into place smoothly. This is why you can go down a bumpy road without jolting very much.

• Struts

Used in the front end of almost all front-wheel-drive vehicles, struts are the mechanical component of a suspension system. Multiple parts make up a strut, including the shock absorbers, strut bearing, steering knuckle, and more.

Struts can also affect the wheel alignment of a vehicle and will help control your vehicle – as opposed to your shocks that act to absorb bumps or impact.

• When Do They Need to Be Replaced?

There are a few ways and signs that may indicate you need to replace them.

One visual cue is if you see a fluid leak. An easy way to spot this is if your car has been sitting in your driveway for a long time. Dark liquid spots near your tires might herald a leak. If you can see your shocks/struts and they looked damaged, bring it in. Odd tire wear can be another potential sign.

A decline in your car’s handling or more bouncing and shaking than normal, might be an indicator that you need to replace your shocks or other suspension components. Any noise, stiff steering, or uneven braking can also indicate an issue.

Lastly, once you hit the 50,000-mile mark you may need to have your shocks and struts replaced. This is a general rule of thumb but driving habits, the environment and road conditions can also have an impact.
